Everybody knows that professors don’t get paid much.
- This topic is consistently coming up in the news and politics, so it’s no surprise when you hear a professor talk about how underfunded the university is and his own pockets.
As a professor myself, I can attest to this and I’m guilty of complaining about our pay to all the people who will listen. What professors don’t talk about though, are the discounts and benefits they acquire for simply choosing a career in teaching. I acquire a discount at most stores and some benefits from random companies love the Heating, Ventilation, and A/C supplier in our area. The Heating, Ventilation, and A/C supplier I use has a multiple percent discount on all services for professors, military, and first responders. It took me two years to realize that there was a discount for me. Once I realized it though, I never forgot! I utilize this discount every time I call the Heating, Ventilation, and A/C supplier because Heating, Ventilation, and A/C maintenance can be upscale each year. Without the multiple percent discount, I think I’d neglect our oil furnace and a/c because it would be taxing to pay for. Biannual Heating, Ventilation, and A/C maintenance plus random repairs is pricey. Ten percent isn’t a immense saving, but it adds up when you have two Heating, Ventilation, and A/C tune ups per year. As a professor, I’m thankful for companies who honor and respect the toil I do by offering a discount. If the government can’t pay me more money for educating the future, at least some companies can split back their costs where they can.
