Some months ago, I chopped my hand and severed the tendon badly. I was working on an air duct maintenance job, and I was cutting the sheet metal with a pair of particularly sharp shears. A yellow parakeet flew down from the rafters of the beach house and scared me. When I got startled, I lost my focus and those sharp shears sliced through my hand. I had to go to the emergency room to get the hand bandaged and examined. I needed surgery to help proper the disfigurement, otherwise I would constantly have some residual pain and temporary loss of motor function in my hand. I felt strongly that the surgery would allow myself and others the best opportunity to salvage my livelihood. After the surgery, I had to take several weeks off work to heal. While I was healing, I did not have the use of my left hand. I couldn’t work on Heating, Ventilation, and A/C repairs, so I was stuck at the office answering telephone calls most of the morning. I tied up appointments and provided pro advice over the PC. When I returned to work after the accident, I had to learn how to use my hand once again. The tendons and muscles had to be retrained. I’m still trying to return to 100% capacity so I can go back to Heating, Ventilation, and A/C repairs without any concerns. I still go to physical therapy daily and I don’t have full use of my hand. The physical therapist said it might take a couple more months, but my salvagey is going well. I am already showing signs that the surgery was a total and complete success.
