I debated over whether or not I wanted to invest into a water softener.
I did some research and learned that water softeners are an ideal solution to the problems caused by hard water. I like taking long, hot showers. My water is overrun with minerals and used to dry out my skin and cause frizzy hair. It also diminished the lathering power of soaps and detergents. Whether I was washing my hair or washing dishes, I needed to use an excessive amount of shampoo, body wash, laundry detergent or dish soap. The water softener has reduced usage by almost 50%, which saves me some money. The hard water was a problem for every appliance that came in contact with it. Dishwashers, water heaters and wash machines wore out very quickly. The mineral buildup led to rust, leaks, clogged lines, lack of efficiency and failure. I had actually given up on using a dishwasher because my glasses and plates came out so badly spotted and stained. The water softener has allowed me to run the dishwasher again. We also enjoy cleaner clothes and our whites stay white. Prior to the water softener our linens, towels and clothing would quickly become discolored and feel stiff to the touch. We had issues with static cling. The hard water caused a lot of damage, expense and work. I felt like I was scrubbing tubs, toilets and sinks non stop. There were always hard water spots and stains. The faucets quickly corroded, aerators frequently clogged and shower heads were always crusted over with minerals. I know the hard water was also corroding the inside of the plumbing pipes. Our hot water tanks and toilets never lasted more than a couple of years. Probably one of the most noticeable benefits of installing a water softener is the better smell and taste of the water from the tap. I was spending quite a bit of money on bottled water. Now we are able to drink from the faucet.
