Aunt Jo’s concern with an Heating and Air Conditioning scam

Our very elderly aunt had been living in his own house as a widow for numerous years, then there were enough of his own children who lived nearby who could stop in to spend money his a visit and tend to his needs without requiring any outside assistance, and my friend and I knew that one afternoon he wouldn’t be able to stay in his own home, although no one wanted to divulge it… What my pal and I didn’t foresee is that Aunt Jo would be scammed by a company impersonating his heating and cooling company; It all began when he acquired a cellphone call from someone claiming that his Heating and Air Conditioning system was due for maintenance, and he didn’t think the name on his caller ID and told them that his Heating and Air Conditioning company was so-and-so. The caller then claimed that they had taken over his Heating and Air Conditioning dealer’s maintenance programs and that his heating system was due for an inspection and cleaning. They told his that the inspection would cost fifty dollars and that a serviceman would be there the next afternoon. Completely convinced, he agreed to the appointment and, as they promised, a man arrived the very next afternoon, but naturally the scam artist was dressed in official-looking clothes, was friendly, and carried with him a shop vac and a toolbox, then after our aunt led him to the basement, he busied herself upstairs until he was finished, which is when he presented his with the bill. She was shocked to see that the charge was for five hundred dollars! When he balked at the amount, he abruptly became quite intimidating and he felt that he had no choice but to write him a check to cover the bill; Once he left, he called his Heating and Air Conditioning company to complain about the bill. Imagine his surprise when he learned that it was a scam!
