How often should you replace your air filters? As a heating and air conditioning worker this is a question I get fairly frequently.

Well I would say there’s a general amount of time that you should change your air filters, I would say that it depends on the situation as well.

I would say that for most people you should change your air filters out every 3 months, however some people are going to need to change your air filters out way more often than that. I personally know a couple people that change their air filters out every single month. Depending on how clean your home is and how good the air filter is will determine how often you need to change your air filters. For example, if you’re just using disposable air filters and your house gets dirty often, I would change your disposable air filters as often as possible. Probably once a month; however, if you’re using a much higher quality air filter that does a better job at catching all kinds of dirt and contagions that are in the air, such as a HEPA filter or UV light filter. Then you can go several months without having to change those out, especially if your house is relatively clean. With a UV light filter you should check the bulb frequently to make sure it hasn’t burned out. Replacing your air filter is more than just having good indoor air quality, it’s also good to keep your heating and air conditioning system in good shape. If your indoor air quality isn’t good, it can also affect your health as well. There are multiple reasons and benefits to have a good air filter in your home.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like working in the heating and air conditioning industry? While someone that works in the heating and AC industry I can give you an inside look as to what I do in my day-to-day life.

Working as a heating AC worker is really self-explanatory, if someone has a broken heating and air conditioning system I repair it and if need be, order the parts needed to repair it.

I start my day by getting up early and eating breakfast, eggs and some coffee are my favorite to start the day with. But I head out to my job. I take a look at the schedule and I see all that needs to be done for the day, then I head out on my first repair job. Just the other day I had to repair someone’s air conditioning system because it had stopped cooling. Thankfully this was not a major problem and all that they needed was for me to add a little bit of freon back into the unit. Once that was done they had a nice and cold icy air again. One of the reasons that I love to do this job so much is because of their reactions I get to see you on other people’s faces. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people be completely overwhelmed with joy just from having a working air conditioning system again. I understand what that’s like because we live in a hot and arid kind of environment, so when you have an AC system that isn’t working, living in a house where you’re constantly hot and sweaty is a miserable kind of existence. Depending on the severity of what needs to be fixed sometimes it’ll only take me around 10 minutes to fix an issue with a heating or air conditioning system other times it might take hours, heating and AC repairs is only one part of the job however. I do just as many heating and air conditioning system installations and I get just as much joy from doing these as I do repairing people’s heating and AC systems. The reason is because I love seeing the expression on people’s faces when I finally get to install that shiny new HVAC system they’ve been wanting for so long.

When it comes to new information I’ve always loved to learn.

So when I started working as a heating and air conditioning specialist, I had that same spark in me that wanted to gather as much information that I could about everything heating and air conditioning related.

Part of my intense desire and curiosity to learn came from my dad. My dad was always the same way and he really inspired me to always explore all my options before doing anything. He used to work as a heating and air conditioning system himself and as soon as I saw him working on heating and air conditioning units I knew that I wanted to work on them too. So he started showing me from a young age how to work on HVAC systems and repair them. I wasn’t sure if this new passion of mine would stick at that time, but that’s exactly what happened. I found a new love for the heating and AC profession and when I was a teenager I started reading all the heating and cooling books I could get my hands on. I tried to do my very best in high school so I could get into a good college and learn the HVAC trade. I was successful in high school and after I graduated I went into heat and cooling school and I only recently got my HVAC certification and finally got my first job. My future looks bright and I’m excited for what is on the horizon.

 

Learning facts about HVAC systems

Waiting for the heating and air conditioning worker to come out and install my brand new air conditioning system is not something that was easy on me.

In fact it was one of the hardest things I’ve had to face lately. I know that might sound silly to some people, it’s just waiting for an air conditioning appointment but you have to understand where I’m coming from when I tell you this. I’m just the kind of person that gets hot really easily. It just isn’t enjoyable for me to have to be in these hot and uncomfortable conditions. Now I guess most people would say if they’re hot and sweaty that they’re not going to be comfortable, but I feel like the difference between me and them is that I seem to get hot far easier than the average person. Everyone else in my family will find the temperature in the house to be comforting and enjoyable when it’s around 76 degrees. But for me on the other hand this is just not the case at all, in fact I find myself to be uncomfortable at that temperature. It is at that point that I start feeling hot. Once it’s 78 degrees in the house I’m breaking out into a sweat. In order to get rid of this horrible feeling that I’ve been feeling, I got myself a zone control HVAC system. I had to do this for the sake of my wife and I because we have pretty different temperature preferences. I feel like out of the two of us I’m the one that’s the problem because I always need a really warm or really cold temperature where she is like most people and just prefers room temperature. It doesn’t really matter, The zone control HVAC system has worked fantastically for the both of us, and so I don’t have to worry about getting too hot anymore. But I also remember when I was waiting for the zone controlled HVAC to be installed, it felt like the longest wait of my life.

It’s only been one day and I’m already tired of waiting for the heating and air conditioning guy to get here.

A little bit of backstory: I purchased a brand new air conditioning system a couple weeks ago.

When I made the appointment with my local HVAC company to have it installed, they were pretty booked up and so I wasn’t able to get an appointment for 3 weeks from now. Waiting 3 weeks for me is going to feel like an eternity because I can’t wait to have my brand new air conditioning system installed. My old AC system that I have now is barely functioning as it is, and the AC system that I replaced it with is much better and far superior technology wise to the one that I have now. so waiting almost another 3 weeks before they’re going to be able to come out and have it installed feels like an eternity. Until then, I’m stuck using my old air conditioning system because my old air conditioning system is not very fun to use. It’s not only really old and outdated, but it’s barely able to cool my house as it is. Right now every single day in my house it’s always so hot and the heat is almost unbearable. I’m finding myself comfortably running the fans and opening the windows just in some cool fresh air so I don’t overheat. I already know that the day the heating and AC guys make their way out to install my brand new air conditioning system is going to be one of the best days ever. It’s going to open an entire New era for me, an era of wonderful cooling technology and a nice cool house. However, until then I’m going to have to wait.

I can’t believe that I waited so long to replace the air filter. I had really needed to replace the air filter for the past month and it seems like no matter how hard I had tried to get it done, it’s like I was never getting around to it. Finally I set a reminder for myself and wrote the date on the calendar and circled it to make sure that I wouldn’t forgive. I keep my calendar on the back of my bedroom door and so I always look at it to see what task I have planned out for that day. I was looking forward to doing all kinds of activities when I got up this morning and then I looked at my calendar and I saw that I had the air filter to change. It was an additional thing that I hadn’t planned on doing because I forgot about it but it was no big deal and I was excited to change the air filter because I knew that it really needed it. So I went and I took a mini trip down to the local heating and AC business and picked up the air filter that I needed. I didn’t have any air filters on hand at the house and so I purchased one from the heating and AC company. It wasn’t any kind of fancy air filter like a washable air filter or a HEPA filter, it was just your regular disposable air filter. But it was enough for me. It did the job of keeping my indoor air quality clean and that’s what matters. I changed it out that evening and now hopefully I should have a great indoor air quality for at least a good few months.

The first air conditioning system that I got was the best one.

This was surprising because after shopping around for AC systems for a while I thought that I had planned out what air conditioning system that I was going to get.

I thought I knew what I wanted but it turned out I was wrong. But when I purchased an air conditioning system online, I accidentally bought the wrong one. It wasn’t until I got this same AC unit in the mail that I discovered that I was actually much happier with my accidental purchase and the one that I was going to get. This is because my new air conditioning system had some features that the one I was going to buy didn’t have. I know because I decided to buy the one I was going to originally get to compare the two of them and see which one I liked better. What I liked about this air conditioner that I was keeping was that the AC got much cooler than the original air conditioner. It was significant that I noticed a huge difference when I came to clean the inside of my house. My house was a lot more cold and comfortable because of this. It didn’t take me any time to figure out that this was the air conditioning system that I was going to stick with and I was happy to have this AC unit. I’m glad that I decided to keep it because at first when I accidentally purchased the wrong one I was considering sending it back, but after seeing how good it is I’m glad that I’m keeping it and have decided to give it a try. Now I have two air conditioning systems that I can enjoy.

I believe in good fortune and I’ve had my share of good breaks going my way.

But for the most part, I’ve also put myself in position to be successful when it comes to those good breaks.

At least that’s the case when it comes to my business. And since I spend almost all of my time inside the zone controlled HVAC of the office, career success has certainly been a main focus of my adult life. So much so that I’m 45 and still single. I’m not so sure that I’ll ever find a partner who can understand all the time I spend in commercial HVAC as opposed to the air conditioning in my house. And man, it’s a nice house. That’s another thing that is pretty great about being good at what you do in the business world. I make a good living and that comes with a really great place to live. Yet, if it weren’t for the people who take care of my house and me, I don’t think my home would be so inviting. I count on different services to help out inside the central air conditioning of my home. There is a lady who pretty much runs the house and takes care of most of my needs. But there is also a handyman who takes care of any of my home projects. It was that very handyman who told me last week that if I wanted someone to have a look at my residential HVAC, I needed to call an HVAC professional. I was a bit surprised. In the 12 years that he’s been helping me out, this is probably the first time that he suggested a professional. But my man was adamant that HVAC equipment is only to be serviced or repaired by an HVAC professional.

I’m so happy to be done with another Winter.

• That leaves two more of these ugly Winters before I can finally turn around and get back south.

Before I moved up here, I hadn’t even seen snow in person before. I come from a region down south where the Winter comes with very limited heating. The heat pump pretty much is reserved for full on air conditioning where I come from. It’s May now and I just uncovered the HVAC cabinet outside my house this week. For once, the gas furnace is now reduced to occasionally coming on in the wee hours of the morning. To me, that’s the end of Winter and full embrace on Spring. It’s not exactly super warm yet but I’ll take it over all the snow, ice and digit temperatures that just go on for months during the Winter. I cover the HVAC cabinet outside of my home as part of prepping my house for Winter. That’s another thing I won’t miss when I’m done with this commitment and can return home. The only thing I have to do to prepare for Winter down there is call the HVAC company. Even though we don’t need much heating from the heat pump, I’ve always had heating maintenance done in the Fall. Now, I’m calling the HVAC company up here to come out and do the air conditioning tune up here real soon. Believe it or not, July and August can come with some temperatures and humidity levels that actually need a bit of cooling comfort from the heat pump. Oh man, am I ever glad that the Winter is done. That’s four down and two to go.
