Everyone knew what she did for a living, because it was all she talked about. I hated to say it, but there were some things more important to talk about than heating and air conditioning. There was something I needed to tell her, although I could not get a word in edgewise. I was getting to where I wanted to trick her, tie her to the chair, and have a one-sided conversation with her when she couldn’t talk. We were at the dinner table last year when she started droning on about her job again. She laughed every so often, but I didn’t hear a word she was saying. She gave me a glass of wine, and I declined. Normally she would say something when I say no to wine, although she was so into her story, it was like she didn’t even know I was there. I got up and went to the powder room, and she smiled when I returned. She picked up with her story about her latest heating and air conditioning goofy story, and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. She stopped for a drink, and I told her that if she said one more word about heating and air conditioning, I was going to get angry. This is when I got serious with her. She told me all I had to do was say something. I told her I wanted to have a baby, which got her attention, although she went into a story about a pregnant lady who was having heat flashes.

The lights would flash every time the a/c component came on. We didn’t notice it in the afternoon, because we didn’t have the lights on, but at night, it was noticeable. I knew it had to be an electrical issue, and it worried me that we could have a fire while she was at work. I called the heating and air conditioning contractor hoping my spouse would notice the flashing lights before they arrived. My spouse called off work one night, because she wanted to use up some of her holiday time. She was in the basement when the a/c turned on. Finally, she had seen what I had been talking about for the last couple of weeks and would not be making a fuss when she saw the bill from the heating and air conditioning contractor or the electrician. She gave me a list of the days she planned to take off, and said any of them would do. The other days were for us to go away on a nice holiday.

Six months ago, my sister and I got in a horrible fight that didn’t end well.

We almost came to blows before she walked out, and I hadn’t talked to her since.

I felt terrible for the things I had said, although she greatly annoyed me. I wanted her back in my life, but I didn’t know how to approach her. I was talking to my wife about my regrets over the fight, and she told me to apologize. Even if it meant sending her a card for her birthday, I needed to talk to her. When I didn’t make the overture, my wife decided she had to leave. When dad called in tears, I knew there was something wrong.

He told me he couldn’t live alone anymore and asked if my invitation for him to move in my house was still open.

I told him to let us know when he was ready, and my partner and I would have his room ready for him. He wanted to know if he could move in as soon as the following weekend. The room was ready, but the powder room was yet to be finished, and my partner and I needed heating and air conditioning in that area. I called my spouse and told her dad was moving in ten days. She told me to grab the list of things we needed for the powder room, and that I needed to call the AC contractor and have them install the ductless heating and air conditioning system in the room. I then called my sister-in-law and asked if she was tied up this weekend. I explained the situation and she said she would be over early Sunday afternoon and they could have the powder room installed by the end of the weekend. We were in a hurry to get the powder room done, but the heating and air conditioning worker couldn’t get here until the Friday before dad arrived. It surprised me how fast the heating and air conditioning was installed. The heating and air conditioning professional had it installed before my spouse and her sister had the shower installed. Everything was ready for dad, and all I had to do was go up to the farm and put it up for sale. I knew this would be the hardest part, because I had to close up the condo once I packed the few things dad wanted to bring with him. • I wasn’t sure why she had an up-to-date heating and air conditioning system installed if she wasn’t going to be living here, but I thanked her, and even though we hadn’t gotten along in years, I wished him good fortune when he said he had found someone else and was leaving.

We had already talked about divorce, and my pal and I were still friends. I loved the heater, and it kept me nice and cozy during the winter season, but when summer time arrived last year, I hated it. The a/c device worked too much, and it never cooled the condo properly. I was used to window a/c units, and I wanted them back. I went to the basement to see if they were down there. I was planning on turning the central a/c off and putting the window a/c units back in. When I didn’t find them in the basement, I looked in the attic, but to no avail. My last resort was to go into the garage. I hadn’t been in the garage for years, because it has always been a dark and depressing place. Had I known my ex had cleaned it out before leaving, I may have gone in there first. Not only was it cleaned out, but he had the window a/c units on a shelf. I called a neighbor of mine and asked if she could help me out. Two hours later, we had the window a/c units installed, the central a/c was removed, and my great friend and I were celebrating with red wine.

Had someone told me I needed to measure my window before buying an a/c unit, I would not be in the mess I was in.

I walked into the store and told them I needed a window a/c component for my dining room, but no one said they had odd sizes or that they were odd BTUs.

I knew how big my dining room was and provided him with the dimensions. She quickly figured out numerous BTUs I needed and pointed out many a/c units that could work for my dining room. One looked too big, and I was afraid it would be too large for me to lift and install. I wasn’t petite, but I wasn’t a monster like some guys I knew. I looked at the smaller one and although it had the same BTU on the label, it weighed a mere fifty pounds. I lifted the AC component and knew it was the right one for me. The girl didn’t tell me it had to be plugged on both sides and that there was nothing to fan out and create a slender fit. I sent the AC component home, opened up the box, and took it into my dining room. I had it seated in the window and the window was down, but I had four inches of open air space on both sides of the window. Now, what was I going to do? The instructions said to build a box for the a/c unit. It was made to go in the wall and not in a window. I called my sister and told her I needed help, because I wasn’t going back for another a/c unit.

It’s not rocket science. That’s the thing that stays in the back of my head when I see all these strategies for a better life. There is so much of just making things complicated that are actually quite simple. One great example is cutting air conditioning costs in the Summer. For sure, I’m all for ways to eliminate what can end up being really high costs for cooling. We live in a region where the Summer months are brutally hot. So of course, we all count on our heat pumps to help us when it comes to being comfortable inside our home. I know that I’m quite thankful to have such good residential HVAC. Yet, I don’t think I need all these complicated strategies you can find online when it comes to saving on cooling costs. Actually, just using some basic logic makes more of a difference in my home than anything else. If you want to reduce the costs of air conditioning during what is a sizzling Summer, lessen the demand on the heat pump. It’s pretty much that simple. The best way to do that isn’t so much forcing yourself to be uncomfortable starts in the Spring. So many folks around here reach for the thermostat as soon as the temperatures begin to rise in the Spring. That’s the mistake that I choose not to make. Instead, I just enjoy the Spring weather and get accustomed to the higher temperatures. The more my body acclimates to the higher temps, the less air conditioning I’ll need all Summer. Not only am I saving on HVAC costs in the Spring but it’s prepping me for a Summer where I just don’t need as much cooling from the heat pump to be comfortable.

This will be my first full Summer down here.

And after just experiencing half of August and all of September, I’m a little scared.

August produced the sort of heat that I had never experienced in my life. It was brutal and I leaned hard on the air conditioning in my new place. I’m still renting as this move isn’t permanent just yet. I work inside the zone controlled HVAC of the company’s southern office. This was a temporary position but it looks like it could become permanent. I know for sure that I’ll be here through the Summer months so I looked to the HVAC company for help. The HVAC equipment in my home is a bit old but does a decent enough job cooling I suppose. But last year, I went deep with the thermostat setting to offset the shock of this kind of heat and humidity. And it cost me a bundle over those 6 or 7 weeks. So I wanted to be sure that I did everything that I could to lower my cooling costs this Summer. Since the rental company wouldn’t do it, I had the HVAC professional come out to do the air conditioning tune up on the heat pump. And that’s when the HVAC technician alerted me to the fact that all I needed to know to cut the cooling costs was on the HVAC company website. Indeed, it was a one stop shop as I am now well versed in all the things that I can do to enjoy air conditioning without going broke.

I need to get around to finishing all my chores for the autumn season.

I like to stick to doing a lot of work around the house on a seasonal rotation.

A lot of the work I do in the Autumn is raking leaves outside. So many leaves fall for my oak and maple trees that it seems like I never stop having to rake them through September, October, and November. Although by the time we get to November the leaves are usually done falling from the trees. At that point the trees are completely barren and look decayed and decrepit. But raking leaves is not the only thing I have to do in the autumn season. I also have to get things ready for the winter. I have to chop lots of wood for the fireplace and also make sure all the weather stripping is replaced and doors and windows. One of the easiest ways to waste money on heating in the winter is by letting in cold drafts. You need to prevent any cold air from getting in and escaping when you’re running your furnace. Even if you’re using a fireplace you don’t want to go through your wood faster than necessary. That’s why it’s so essential to have proper weather stripping every winter season. It’s part of my chore list when I get ready for the winter during October and November. I also make sure to get good quality weather stripping as well. I don’t want it to fail and lack an airtight seal. You don’t want to waste your time with low quality weather stripping material.
