I’ve certainly had my eye on the old HVAC unit the last few years. Yet, it just still kept pumping out quality heating and air. However, about eight months ago that all changed. The HVAC technician came out to do the air conditioning tune up prior to all the heat and humidity we get in the summer. The HVAC professional told me that HVAC equipment was nearing an end. There were signs I would see when the end was in sight. Yet, I really wasn’t going to wait around to see those signs. The way it looked to me, I thought we got more value out of that old HVAC unit then we could have expected. I even had started a savings account a few years ago expecting the HVAC unit to simply stop working. I definitely didn’t want to get caught unprepared at the point that the HVAC simply died. So when it was confirmed by the HVAC technician, I chose to contact the HVAC company and start the process. The HVAC contractor came to our home to inspect and then go over all the options with us. I’m sure glad he did that as the residential HVAC landscape has definitely evolved in the past quarter century. But I was very happy to learn that our ductwork was still going to be functional which was a huge cost savings. Our new HVAC equipment was installed last spring and it has been glorious. It was easily the best air conditioning of my life this past summer.

I add my name to the long list of those who lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

I know just how tough that is.

There were plenty of people who I knew that ended up having to sell their homes because they could no longer afford them. That’s not the case for me as I live in an apartment with mediocre residential HVAC. I was ready for a new heating and cooling method it would have come with a change of address. Still, I didn’t have an income and had to scramble in order to make ends meet. But sometimes out of what seems like a utter chaos comes just what you need. I was free from the commercial HVAC of the office. And I decided to go out on my own which is something I had wanted to do for a long time. I was actually thinking about freedom and liberation as I was walking out of the commercial HVAC of the office for the last time. I did get some severance pay as I’ve been there for more than a decade. So I took that money and started my own consulting business. To keep the overhead costs to a minimum, I started it in that apartment. That’s been two years now and I’m happy to report that I’m a homeowner these days. That’s how great the business has turned out to be. While I’ve hired three other people, we are still doing things remotely from the central air conditioning of our homes. It’s just so nice to be able to be my own boss now. It’s almost as good as having such an amazing residential HVAC.

There is only so much a person can plan for.

But when it came to selling our house and moving, I thought we had it all covered.

We thought we could use the sale of the family home to finally get rid of all our junk and get on with the rest of our lives. After 30 years of accumulating so much stuff inside the central air conditioning of our home, this was a much bigger task than I thought. We decided to move into a two bedroom rental right after the sale of our home. This way we could pare down while also figuring out what the next chapter of our lives held. It seemed like a good idea to both of us. Getting the house on the market was not the easiest thing either. We had a lot of upgrading we needed to do in our home. We started with the kitchen and all the appliances. The HVAC equipment was replaced as well. That was a lot easier thanks to the HVAC contractor. He helped us get the right residential HVAC without spending too much money. We have all the HVAC technology that goes with the latest in residential HVAC. I’m sure that the new HVAC equipment made a big difference when it came to the value of our home. It was also really nice because it was so hot this summer while we were trying to pack to move away. Now that we’re in our rental house, the less than adequate residential HVAC will be a motivator to move along.

I think that I was hardwired to work really hard.

But there are certainly time that I think I’m simply a product of a certain environment and generation. It felt like there was always this implied promise that if you do the right thing the, right thing will happen. So I spent a lot of time inside the commercial HVAC trying to do the right thing. I absolutely have no regrets when it came to my ethics or my efforts. Yet I ended up with a heart attack in my early 50s. It only got worse as a divorce soon followed. It kind of felt like the universe was piling on. However just sitting inside the air conditioning of my rented apartment, I’m coming to realize it just doesn’t matter. I did the best I could and tried to be happy. When I got back on my feet, I mended my heart a bit by taking a sabbatical. All winter I spent in my cabin in the woods by myself with the new love of my life. And that would be the new dog I got once my marriage was over and I was out on my own. But that winter away was so interesting. It was great heating with a wood stove. But I was also lucky to have a ductless heat pump when I would let the fire die out. It was good to spend time alone and not be afraid to just sit in my feelings. I love that cabin and I’m glad that it was such a welcome sanctuary for me last winter.

I really have always tried to be a good neighbor.

And that’s because I have always appreciated good neighbors.

In fact, I like to be the sort of neighborhood that others can depend upon. I’m more than happy to lend a hand. Yet, there’s one neighbor who lives a couple houses down that is the epitome of a bad neighbor. He’s a sort of guy that makes me quicken my step so I can get inside the air conditioning of my home. I just want to get from my air conditioning in the car to my front door without that guy catching me. He’s the sort that just goes on and on about one grievance after another. The other day, this neighbor caught me outside as I was talking to the HVAC technician. He comes by to do HVAC heating maintenance on the heat pump. We get the same HVAC technician both in the fall for the heating maintenance as well as the air conditioning tune up in the spring. It’s part of the HVAC service plan that we take advantage of. I guess the neighbor saw me talking to the HVAC technician and wanted to make a point of calling out HVAC maintenance. Of course, this is the kind of guy that believes HVAC maintenance is a scam. That guy couldn’t be more wrong. This time, I didn’t make for the front door but sort of told him that he needs to mind his business. This stopped him in his tracks. Hopefully that’ll be the end of that guy in my yard.

Okay, so we totally just made a ton of money off selling the family home.

But that’s sort of what we had in mind all along.

We’re just fortunate and grateful to have such good timing. We also upgraded the HVAC equipment the latest when it comes to the current HVAC technology. The HVAC equipment we chose really was the best and it added so much value when it came to selling our home. We had the ductwork cleaning and ductwork resealing done as well. The HVAC professionals only had to replace one section of the ductwork. In fact, I really didn’t want to leave once we had the new residential HVAC. It felt like all I was doing was installing it in to say goodbye to all that great HVAC comfort. But that HVAC equipment was pivotal when it came to the value of our home. I believe it was a major factor in the fact that there were several people bidding for our home. The price of our house just kept going up and up and it was truly exciting to watch. Like I said, we made a lot of money for only owning that home less than 20 years. But then again that was sort of the idea when we bought in this region. It was nice having that new HVAC equipment as we packed up to move. We’re currently renting until we decide just where we want to go what we want to do. But I can assure you that once we were in our new rental house we took the nicest vacation we’ve ever had in our lives.

I think the weather sure should have held more weight when I was making my decisions.

But, I seemed to consider just about everything but the fact that I was going to deal with a very serious winter.

I considered so many other details when it came to taking this new position. But the one thing I really didn’t give enough thought to was moving to a place that a gas furnace runs all the time. For my entire life, winter has been mild with a little bit of help from the heat pump. So perhaps I should have considered the winter weather up north a bit more before agreeing to relocate. I was lucky to find a house that suited my needs just a few weeks after I was moving. My house is a small two bedroom home which is fine since it’s just me. The previous owner actually upgraded the residential HVAC prior to putting it on the market to be sold. This meant that I at least had a great gas furnace from day one. But what I didn’t realize at the time was it it takes more than just great HVAC heating to get through these kinds of winters. That was such a cold first winter that I can hardly even remember I’m a moment when I felt cozy. And that new gas furnace was running all the time. But after one of those winters, I learned that preparing your home for winter makes all the difference. These days, I make sure that winter preparations are done on the house prior to me calling for the heating maintenance from the HVAC professionals.

Price and quality are important factors to consider when buying an air filter.

Besides removing dust from the air and preventing allergies, a good air filter is also more expensive.

A cheap air filter differs from an expensive one. Here are some differences between the two. Filters that are cheap don’t last as long as those that are expensive. Cheap air filters are usually made from paper and cardboard. Materials are cheap to manufacture, but not durable. Cheap filters capture half the dust or pollen before becoming clogged and needing replacement, requiring twice the maintenance time (and twice the cost) of expensive filters. They may also need to be replaced more frequently if exposed to heat or moisture. High-quality materials are used in expensive air filters. Fiberglass is a porous material that can trap more dust and pollen than other materials like cardboard or paper. Additionally, fiberglass resists moisture and doesn’t tear as easily as other materials. The cost of manufacturing it is higher, but it lasts longer and requires less maintenance. You will be able to filter more particulate matter if your air filter has a higher MERV rating. Investing in a high-quality air filter that costs a few extra dollars can keep dust and other contaminants out of your lungs as well as reduce indoor allergens. There may be fewer pleats (sometimes called folds) in a cheap air filter, which reduces the surface area for trapping contaminants.
