It’s hard to believe that it’s the 25th anniversary of me moving here.

I left the city and the poor HVAC cooling of my apartment for a better life in this rural community.

However, being an outsider there weren’t a lot of super friendly people initially. The realtor I had was okay and she got me a great deal on the house because I was willing to replace the HVAC unit. The man selling the place was thrilled that he didn’t have to hassle with the HVAC unit. I actually ended up saving me money as I got a better price on the house. I took those savings and put it into the best residential HVAC I could get. The first few HVAC companies I to talked to we’re busy and couldn’t get to me. This led me to an HVAC professional who was just starting out his business. It was obvious that he had such a passion for heating and cooling. When we met at my house, this HVAC professional was the first person in town to really welcome me. I found that to be a real comfort. We got to know each other a little bit better through the process of replacing the HVAC equipment. And to this day, I still see that guy and his HVAC company is doing great. Of course now that I’m looking to replace that HVAC equipment, I don’t have to look any further than my first HVAC contractor. And sure enough, my buddy came out to talk with me himself even though he has other HVAC contractors working for him. But he wanted to handle the whole thing himself to show his appreciation of our shared loyalty over all these years.

It’s now back to the best weather on earth.

And it will be this way until the spring turns into summer once again.

That’s when we have to endure four months of big time heat and humidity. But, we manage to deal with that in this region due to residential HVAC. Residential HVAC provides the air conditioning that helps us get through those four months of heat season. I just can’t even fathom what living here would be like without HVAC cooling. At the same time, one has to be a bit careful with the HVAC cooling or it gets out of hand very fast. HVAC cooling costs are not cheap. For us, we had a new tool this past summer for making our HVAC equipment as efficient as possible. Since we bought this house, I’ve been the thermostat sheriff in this house. I always was checking the thermostat and programming it for when the house was empty. I mean why pay to over cool an empty house? I was also always the one to maintain thermostat discipline in order to save money. But this summer I gave up all that thermostat control. It was a big deal for me to welcome a smart thermostat into our home. While the smart thermostat has been on my radar for a long time, I guess I just wasn’t ready to give up control. However, we finally had the HVAC company install the smart thermostat and the results we’re amazing. Not only did I not have to hover over the thermostat all summer, the smart thermostat saved us an additional fifteen percent over the best that I could do.

I was the only one who was not good with selling our house.

It was our family home and I just wasn’t so great with not having a family home anymore.

All the kids agreed with their mom it was time for us to sell. It just wasn’t so easy for me though. I loved the house from the time my wife and I first looked at it. That home was where we raised our children. With the help of residential HVAC we were so comfortable for all these years. I was just supposed to sell it and move on? It just didn’t sit right with me and seemed illogical. But I agreed to have a realtor come over to start the listing process. I wasn’t at all prepared for all the things the realtor said we needed to change before ever even listing the house. But to her credit, she was super respectful and was gentle when pointing out all the stuff that needed to be changed. I sincerely appreciated that she treated our house with respect because it was our home for almost 30 years. The realtor was very clear that we needed to replace the HVAC equipment. It seemed sort of weird to me since I thought we could negotiate that when we came to the final price of the home. The realtor showed me data that proved that this was not the way we wanted to go. Without having the latest in residential HVAC, buyers in this region would just move on. We did replace the quality heating and air in our home and we did end up selling our house for a staggering sum. It’s still weird but I’m now sure that we made the right call.

For sure, this wasn’t at all about not loving my family because I do with all of my heart. It’s just that we have such a big family. We all live in a nice house with great residential HVAC. Both my wife and I have good jobs in the commercial HVAC of offices in town. Our kids are wonderful. They actually take care of each other and help us to get everyone where they need to be. I love sharing a house with all these crazy folks and it’s an amazing experience. But during the pandemic, I figured out that I really do need a space of my own. For sure, it’s nice to have a house with a very latest in residential HVAC. The kids all have their own rooms and we enjoy a nice master bedroom. There is an office space but I share that with my wife. But there really just was not a place for me to be alone. Not enough room in the garage. Plus, the garage didn’t have any heating and cooling. So with all of us inside the air conditioning during the pandemic, I decided to turn the finished attic into a space for me. The HVAC company installed a ductless heat pump in there and the results have been outstanding. I love having a small space to myself where I can just sit with my thoughts or read a book. With the quality heating and air from the ductless heat pump, I’m just that much more comfortable to stay up there as long as I need.

• But when I suggested that we turn the big barn on our property into a usable space, she just smiled and thought it was a great idea.

I’m not the sort to just take days off and relax inside air conditioning of my house. I can’t sit still long enough really. So when I said I wanted to make the barn a livable space, I was really serious. So my buddy and I started out with shoring up the exterior and then moved to putting in interior walls. I then had a company come out to put down a floor and then tile that concrete floor. Next came plumbing and electricity. But the final cherry on top was having the HVAC professionals install heating and cooling. We chose to go with ductless heat pumps instead of central air conditioning. The HVAC contractor assured me that we could get by with just three ductless heat pumps and have all the great heating and cooling we needed. The barn has turned out wonderfully. It’s so great to have big gatherings on our property now where people can get inside for some HVAC cooling in the summer. We live in an area where the heat is pretty severe in the summer. So having a break from the sun and the heat inside the barn with some air conditioning is really great. And I have to say I’m super impressed with the ductless heat pumps. HVAC technology really has made some leaps and bounds over the years.

Our region is known for some rather abrupt and unusual weather patterns.

That’s never more true than in the fall and the spring.

We just don’t get enough great weather in the fall and in the spring. Which is quite sad. The winter here is tough. The gas furnace is on well before Halloween and that HVAC heating goes nonstop into April. Indeed it can get weird. The spring weather can go from snow to sun in a week. I’ve always found this to be so strange. Every single fall, I call the HVAC company. I’ll call to make an appointment for HVAC heating maintenance. There’s no way I’m going into a winner without having the gas furnace ready and prepared for The long winter. It gets inspected from top to bottom and tuned up with new parts when needed. This means we go into winter with the best efficiency as well as peace of mind that the gas furnace is in good shape. Yet, when it comes to the air conditioning tune up, I sometimes forget. I forgot last spring. A heat wave hit in April like it sometimes does. And I fired up the air conditioning without HVAC maintenance. After a few days, there was definitely something wrong with the air conditioning. So I called the HVAC professionals who came out and repaired it. It wasn’t a super expensive repair. But the HVAC technician told me it wouldn’t have happened at all had I gotten the HVAC maintenance. That spurred me to do something I probably should have done years ago. I called the HVAC company and signed up for the HVAC service plan.

It was just time for the animals to be in one spot and the family in another.

There were just too many wayward pets for me to handle. I love the fact that my wife and daughter are looking after so many lost pets. But it really was starting to affect the life we lead in our home. When it got to the point that the HVAC equipment came into play, I knew it was time to look for some alternatives when it came to sheltering these pets. Just over a year ago, my daughter and my wife started taking in strays that they found in order to find them new homes. Some of these pets were simply lost and were delivered back to their original owners. Many of the other animals have just just been tossed out and my girls find them new homes. Hard to understand how someone could have abandon an animal. But I’m thankful for people like my wife and daughter. At the same time, I was having to change the air filter on the HVAC equipment at least once a week. This was used all the pet hair and dander. And I wasn’t able to come home and relax in the air conditioning at all due to all the animals in our home. So the community helped out with some fund raising to put an addition onto the garage for the pets. Even the local HVAC company chipped in. They donated a ductless heat pump and installed it for free. Now the animals have their space with good heating and cooling and I have my house back a bit.

Man, I suppose a tiny bit of authority went straight to some old men’s heads.

That’s the only thing I can figure out with what is happening with our HOA.

I’ve been getting notes taped to my door about my HVAC equipment. The notes were then followed by several emails each arriving daily. These were not nice emails either. I was being basically threatened with a daily fine because the HVAC equipment alongside my house was barely visible from the street in front of our house. It appears that this is a big problem. I’m not exactly sure what’s so offensive about a heat pump but they sure have overreacted. What happened was that I sort of blew it trimming when it came to a hedge on that side of the house. It’s a large hedge and from time to time it needs trimming. I did it myself this time and it ended up being a little too short once I got it all evened up. The result was that I ended up taking a bit too much off the top and that’s why the HOA is in such a tizzy. I’ve explained to them a number of times that all it will take is a few months for it to grow out. But they want me to erect a fence until it does. All of this because we can see a sliver of an HVAC cabinet from the road? It’s really as ridiculous as it sounds. Finally, another threatening email arrived and I have simply turned it all over to my attorney. I’m not going to be bullied by some old men that have a little bit of authority.

Sometimes in life, we have to give up some things in order to get to where we really want to go.

That was the case with a recent camping excursion. I’ve always wanted to take the kids back to where I was raised so they could see fall leaves. It’s simply a spectacular time of year and it takes my breath away when you hit it at its peak. However, my kids just weren’t interested and leaving the air conditioning of home for a camping trip. This was a great disappointment for me and even for my wife. When I was a kid, I loved going camping. Dad would grab me up from school where we go hike into the mountains for a long weekend of camping. It was just me and him as mom and my sister we’re at home enjoying the indoor air conditioning. Dad knew a lot about camping and that region and passed all that on to me. There’s not a whole lot better memories and being out of the air-conditioning and out in the woods with my dad. And this is what I wanted a little bit for my kids. When I asked if they wanted to take a vacation up to see the leaves, I got the usual response. So I bargained a bit. Instead of roughing it, we went car camping in a campsite with electricity, bathrooms and the works. I even agreed to bring along space heaters as the kids were worried there would be not enough HVAC heating. It turned out to be a great time anyway and the leaves were simply spectacular.
