I first heard about the HVAC industry when I was 12 years old. Every year, my parents would hire someone who came to our home to service or repair the HVAC system. This happened in spring and fall before we had extreme weather that would require turning on the HVAC system. The HVAC professional always arrived in a van with a clear logo for the company and did his work diligently. If there was even an issue with the system, he’d return and sort things out. When I was 12, I decided to strike up a conversation with the HVAC professional about his job. We ended up talking for the entire time he was doing HVAC repair and he introduced me to the potentials of the HVAC industry. I’d go on to do further research and even began inquiring about HVAC schools in the area. I’d known for a long time I wasn’t into the whole college for 4 years of life, so this was a perfect find for me. It’s been 6 years since I completed HVAC school, got my HVAC certification and began working as a HVAC professional. I love my career and feel there’s always something new to learn as HVAC technology evolves. I also feel like I serve a purpose when I educate my customers about the benefits of proper HVAC care. For example, it’s better to change the air filter every month if you want good air quality. This also helps your HVAC system remain in good working condition for a long time. There are different types of air filters, but by far the best for good air quality are HEPA filters.

Aunt Julie is the best person in the world.

And I love her tasty treats too. When I was young, I would enjoy visiting her home to spend time with my cousins. I’m an only child so it felt great visiting them and I got to spend the entire summer there. After high school, I joined college and summers were now for work and other fun activities. One of my cousins joined the same school as me so we ended up having a fantastic time. Now that we are all grown up and working, I don’t get to visit my aunt that often, but we talk a lot. The other day she was talking to me about this new AC unit that she had installed in her lake house. I recalled her saying something about replacing an old AC unit and it seemed she had done it before summer. However, this new AC unit wasn’t working as expected to keep her home cool. My aunt complained about her high cooling bill, and she also felt the new unit was too powerful. I asked a few more questions and learned my aunt had hired a neighbor who was a retired AC expert to do the job. But, it seemed he didn’t do it right. The best thing to do was call an AC business in town and have them send over an AC technician to take a look. My aunt heeded my advice and the AC technician revealed the new AC unit’s capacity was too big for the lake house. Her only choice was pay for a new AC unit that fit the lake house, plus AC installation. Failure to do so, she might end up with more problems if she kept using the bigger AC.

My partner and I have been together for 5 years. For 4 of those years, we lived in a 2 bedroom apartment in the city. We are city folk and loved living in an area near our favorite hangout spots. The coffee shop was only a block away and so were the bars and fitness center. But, eventually we had to find a house since we wanted to start a family. Our realtor found us a gem outside of town and the area has really grown on us in the last year. The house was a new build and had a brand new HVAC system so we didn’t have to spend any money on HVAC installation. All we needed to do was hire the HVAC company for maintenance in spring and fall. During our first summer in our new home, we noticed we were paying too much money to keep the house cool. At first, we weren’t sure why this was happening. We thought perhaps the HVAC system had an issue so we hired an HVAC expert to take a look. Her company does same-day response so a few hours later she passed by the house. There was no issue with the HVAC system. But, upon further investigation, the HVAC expert said by turning down the thermostat each time we felt hot, we were using more energy. The unit had to work harder to keep up with the change in temperature hence the high energy bill. It’s better and cheaper to set the thermostat at a constant temperature and leave it at that.

Alice loves working from home. When the pandemic hit, it took time to adjust to the new way of life. Alice had grown up knowing she had to be in an office to work in her career. But, all that changed as the world was forced to adopt a new normal. Her company was among those that embraced the whole work-from-home culture. In the beginning, she’d get all dressed up to work in her home office. But, all that changed into working in her pjs and only wearing an official top for video calls. This past summer, Alice had to stop her busy day to take care of her air conditioning. Her company has grown and now Alice manages more accounts. Being so busy, Alice forgot one crucial step before turning on the air conditioner in summer. She failed to phone the AC business and hire an expert to check her system. By mid-summer, it was unbearably hot and humid outside. This meant Alice was relying on her air conditioning to stay comfortable in her busy home office. But, one morning, she noticed her space was feeling warmer. This went on and each passing day it seemed the air conditioner was failing to work properly. Alice could no longer work in her home office or sit comfortably in the other rooms. She had to phone an AC business and have an expert solve the issue. AC maintenance is essential and the AC expert made sure Alice understood this when he came by. The air filter was clogged with dirt and grime which made it hard for the unit to keep cooling her home. I’m quite close with my dad. He always says his relationship with his dad was hard. My grandpa was a tough man who worked in the coal mines for many years. His policy was he took care of the bills and that was enough. And so he never made any attempt to bond with his children, especially his son. Dad grew up feeling that void and longing to connect with his father. So, he swore to do his best to have that with his son. I must admit I feel so lucky to have my dad in my life because he is the best. Last year, I had to relocate for work and dad came with me because he wanted to see me settled in. As much as we both love the beach and hot weather, I moved to an area with high humidity. Dad wasn’t a big fan of the humidity and made it a point to let me know several times. My new house came with a fantastic cooling system that kept the 2 bedroom apartment cool. But, this didn’t solve the humidity issue for my dad. The best thing to do was purchase a portable dehumidifier. Since I had to work, dad was the one who had to find an HVAC store in the area and go buy one. He called later in the day to say he’d found the best HVAC store in the area owned by the nicest gentleman. Dad and him would meet up later for some beers after closing the HVAC store. I was smiling because I knew dad wanted to stay for some time and now he had a friend to see in the area.

Is geothermal heating worth it? This has been a question running in my mind for about 2 years.

This all started when I went to visit a friend of mine who lives in another state. She was always complaining about her heating system costing her a small fortune. My friend lives in an area that receives brutal winters that start way too early. So, while other people are only using a heating system in the evening during fall, she might need it all day. As a result, my friend had to contend with paying high energy bills every month. Eventually, she spoke with her HVAC professional about the high energy bills and asked for advice. Asking for help proved to be the right move since the HVAC professional was more than willing to help her. He taught my friend about geothermal heat pumps and geothermal heating. It’s not cheap to set up, but it does wonders when it comes to lowering energy bills. My friend took it upon herself to learn all she could about geothermal heating and knew it was her saving grace. After saving for some time, she finally had the system set up in her home. From the time the new heating system went active, I barely heard any complaints about high energy costs. My friend swears she found the best way to keep her home warm from mid-fall to the end of winter. And she no longer has to pay a small fortune for this privilege. Her positive experience with geothermal heating has me thinking I might invest in the same. The money isn’t an issue, but I’ve also been considering that this is an eco-friendly system.

I’d not take a vacation in some time. Ever since I left my job and started my business, it’s been taking up so much time. Funny how I wanted independence and ended up working more hours. But, my business mentor had warned me about this. She stated that a business is like a baby. They will demand your time for the first few years. That means I had to put in all I have to make my business work. Eventually, things were looking up so I decided to take my first break in 2 years. It was such a great time spent away in some rural place. When I got back, I was refreshed and ready to kick the ground running. On my first day back, I got to work early to clean up and also get the air conditioner running. Since it was summer, the air was hot and humid everywhere. I couldn’t wait to get the air conditioner running and restore order in my shop. After about half an hour of the cooling system running, I knew something was wrong. There was a strong musty smell that had me concerned. This is an antique shop and shoppers love walking around for hours checking different items. The smell would make it so difficult for them to do so. I immediately called an HVAC company for assistance and in an hour they had someone at the shop. It turns out I had an issue with mold and mildew because of dirty ductwork. The best solution was to hire the HVAC company to do extensive duct cleaning and restore air quality. I had to close for a few hours but I knew it would be worth it.

In this region, most houses have some sort of heat to get them through the winter.

I have friends who have wood burning stoves, which is an excellent source of heat but requires a lot of manual labor. I have friends who have electric furnaces, but those aren’t reliable during the toughest winter storms due to power outages. I also have friends who have gas furnaces and those always work out the best. I have a gas furnace myself because it made the most sense for my home and my needs. My house isn’t in a super populated area, so when the power goes out, it can take days for someone to come fix it. I can’t survive in a house without heat when the temperature regularly drops below freezing, which is why a gas furnace was essential. I do have a real fireplace in my living room, but that requires a lot of preparation and tending. The fireplace is more for looks and emergency situations. Having a gas furnace installed instead of an electric furnace was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The only major concern I have with a gas furnace is carbon monoxide poisoning. Thankfully, with regular HVAC maintenance, I can avoid issues like this and stay safe. I also have several carbon monoxide detectors around the house that bring me peace and assurance. I know a few people who refuse to use a gas furnace due to carbon monoxide, but they’re always the ones who need a place to stay when their electricity goes out.

When my husband mentioned the idea of installing a ductless mini split system into our basement instead of connecting our existing ductwork for central heat and air, I was against it. We were renovating our basement and finishing it so that we could utilize the space as a family and for entertaining. I really wanted to continue using our central HVAC system because it would be sleek and minimal. The thought of installing a ductless unit to the wall was distracting to the eye and it would take up space. Ductwork and central HVAC was all hidden behind the drywall and the only evidence of an HVAC system were the air vents. My husband was adamant about a ductless mini split system though because he thought it would heat and cool our basement more efficiently. I knew he was probably right, but I couldn’t get past the idea of having a large piece of HVAC equipment mounted to the wall. My husband would not be deterred, and he came to me with a ductless unit that could be mounted into the ceiling. The entire ductless unit could be installed flush against the ceiling so that there was no extra equipment hanging. The only thing people would see would be the outside of the ductless unit and the air vents that pushed the air out. The ductless unit could even be painted to match the color of the ceiling so that it blended in even more. This was the perfect solution for us!
