A little while ago when I ran into the bank, I just wanted to use the ATM they have inside. Well, the bank was so hot. I asked the tellers if they had an issue with the cooling system and they confirmed there was an issue with an Heating & A/C professional on the way. I suppose these women keep up with their proper Heating & A/C maintenance, so I’ll never be disappointed when I go to deposit or withdraw funds!

The trouble is, it’s not always apparent that the issue is a minor one that requires only an easy fix.

I was quite frustrated recently after buying and getting a brand new climate control system installed in my new home. Well, it wasn’t a brand new home. In fact, the prior climate control system needed to be replaced, as it had been in service for over 10 years. It had not been well-maintained by the previous owner either. Getting a new climate control system was a priority before moving in, and I paid a pretty penny for a very nice model. Trouble was, all of the sudden, it stopped working the way it should have just a few weeks after moving in. The heat simply was not kicking on, when I had programmed it to kick on. It’s the middle of January, and a real chill sets in just after dark. The thermostat for my climate control system is programmable, and I thought that I had set it to go up to 72 degrees at 8 p.m. Later on, I climbed out of bed to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, only to discover that it was freezing and the heating system wasn’t on at all! I worried that my brand new heater was already broken, and I was fuming. I called the company that installed it, and they came the next day. Long story short, I simply did not understand how my own thermostat worked. I didn’t bother to pay attention to the instruction manual, and so I paid for the technician to help me understand what I could have already read on my own!

Clean air is a precious thing! Anyone who suffers from allergies regularly will tell you that they really miss the days when they can breathe in and out deeply and freely, without sputtering into a cough or a sneeze.

However, did you know that your HVAC system benefits from unrestricted air flow just as surely as you do? Virtually every climate control system requires some sort of air filter. Nobody wants irritants or any kind of undesired particles floating through the air. Again, it’s just like trying to breathe through clogged sinuses. If you’re using a furnace, and the air filter has not been replaced recently, it may also cause the device to get too hot and shut off when you’re trying to operate it at high temperatures. Thankfully, in most cases, replacing the air filter with a fresh, clean one is simple, and can be done by anyone, nevermind just HVAC technicians. In fact, replacing your air filter for your climate control system is the most basic form of maintenance, and is very necessary!

It’s best to get a certified HVAC technician to do regular maintenance on your climate control system. A good HVAC system is an investment costing potentially thousands of dollars. That is a steep sum, but It’s not a one-and-done purchase. Unfortunately, as of yet, no climate control system is self-maintaining and repairing. Think of it this way: you can invest hundreds of dollars, perhaps even thousands of dollars, over the course of the life of your climate control system, paying for repairs that could have been a simple fix if they were addressed quickly and professionally. Alternatively, you could sign up for a maintenance plan with a reputable HVAC company that ensures that your HVAC system is working optimally at all times. As a result, you will spend less money and get more life out of your system to boot! In this era of technological conveniences, it is easy to be lazy. We love our modern creature comforts, but we take them for granted and just wish that they would go on providing comfort without any input or effort on our part to maintain them. In the end though, a quick phone call to a local HVAC technician and what may amount to less than a dollar a day going towards making sure that your climate control system is keeping you comfortable at all times is hardly all that much of an inconvenience. What is a major inconvenience however, is freezing in the winter and sweating bullets in the summer, because you don’t regularly maintain your climate control system!

I can’t say that I didn’t see exactly where the money was going while I was attending though.

My university was very nice. All of the facilities were aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. The dining commons had the most blissful air conditioning!! Me and my friends often stayed there, carrying on a conversation long after finishing eating, just to enjoy the comfortable temperature, especially in the summer. Our dorm rooms even had individual thermostats! Talk about feeling spoiled; my parents lorded over the thermostat my whole childhood! Still, there was one building that did not have the climate control set to a reasonable temperature. Actually, it was one particular room in the library, which had three floors. The computer labs were on the third floor, and it was positively ice-cold in there at pretty much all times! Perhaps it was because computer equipment requires very cool temperatures in order to function optimally, but my PC works just fine, and I’m not freezing to death in my bedroom right now! At least the frigid air helped one stay awake when pulling all-nighters trying to finish up term papers or study for exams. Yes, the library was open pretty much all hours. Actually, I had friends who were the opposite of me and complained that the cold A/C made them fall asleep while they were trying to study. I simply learned to wear a thick hoodie in the computer lab. I actually bought a university hoodie from the shop on the first floor of the library. Maybe they were trying to create a market for such attire.

I had a pretty enjoyable junior high and high school experience.

I went to a sizable school that had just under 4,000 students attending in grades 6th through 12th.

The junior high and high school buildings were separate from each other, but the cafeteria was shared by all. It was a nice facility, and we genuinely had good food offered to us most of the time. I guess I grew up after the age of mystery meat and pizza days during which they served mini, square, “pizzas” that were more fitting for army MREs than a school. My dad attended the school before I did, and he’s the one that claims that the lunch menu used to be terrible, but both me and my dad agree that the air conditioning in the cafeteria has always been over the top. It is just plain frigid in that cafeteria all the time! If you were unlucky enough to only be able to find a seat that was directly below the air vents, you had to eat your lunch very quickly if it was hot. If you carried on a conversation for too long without eating, the A/C would make something that was piping-hot a few moments before lukewarm, or even cold. During my freshman and sophomore years though, there was one upside to that frigid air conditioning. Lunch was right after PE during those two years! We couldn’t wait to walk into the cafeteria and let the cool air wash over us after sweating buckets outside in the warm months! Unfortunately, during the winter, the cafeteria was almost just as cold, as if they didn’t use the heating unit at all! Good thing we did PE in the gym on most days that it was very cold!

Sometimes, you need to take a day off from work just to take a day off from work. If you are a hard worker, and you hardly ever miss a day, every now and then you shouldn’t feel the need to justify simply taking a day off to relax. That’s my philosophy. I took last Friday off, and it was glorious. I didn’t visit anywhere special, oh no; I stayed in. It had snowed the previous evening. There was just shy of a foot of the white stuff on the ground. I figured this was the perfect time to call in. I gave my best impression of someone down with strep throat. After I got off the “sick” call, I cranked up the heater and threw a few logs on the fire for good measure. Then, I brewed some tea, toasted a couple english muffins, and sat down on my big, comfortable couch, wrapped up in blankets. It was in the single digits outside, so I needed every bit of the heat from my furnace and the fireplace. I let my mind drift for a moment, to the hardships that I would be going through had I not arranged for this day to be one of rest and recuperation. I imagined at that moment, I’d be trudging into the office in wet boots, cursing the insufficient heating on our floor. Dwelling on such thoughts, I felt absolutely no remorse for treating myself to a relaxing day. I didn’t do anything productive that Friday, but that’s the point. I just basked in the warmth of my blessed home’s heater and fireplace, read a few chapters of my latest favorite book, and then promptly fell asleep!
