The other day I was taking one of those walks and I passed by this one outlet store and seen that they had portable air conditioning systems on sale.

I couldn’t believe it because I really had been wanting to get a portable air conditioning system for my bedroom but they were a bit too much for me in price. I was trying to find one that was one sale but was having no luck. However, now that I seen this outlet store had them on sale I walked right in to check it out. The timing was great because they were nearly sold out of the portable air conditioning systems. So right away I grabbed one of the last ones, paid for it and then walked it home with the rest of my walk! I was so lucky to have been in the right place at the right time to be able to even know about this portable air conditioning system that was on sale. When I got home my wife was very happy with what I came home with because she never thought that we would have a portable air conditioning system anytime in the near future. Sometimes luck just plays a hand at things. And now that I have the portable air conditioning system, we can start saving money on our monthly electric bills by running the portable air conditioning system in the bedroom at night instead of the central heat and a/c unit.

Earlier this year, I bought an apartment within a larger building. This apartment is in a great location and is quite spacious. However, the downside is that it’s a pretty outdated space. I knew that I was taking on a big project when I bought it, but if I can update the unit, it will be worth a lot of money some day. I knew that there was no air conditioning, but I didn’t realize that I would have to put in all the ductwork if I wanted to add central air. I realized that it was going to be too big of a project, and I would have to find another method for air conditioning. I considered using portable air conditioning systems and window units, but I really wanted the place to have a more permanent cooling system. After I did a little research, I learned that there was another solution. I could get ductless mini split air conditioning units that mount on the walls. The ductless mini split just needs to connect to an outdoor compressor. I wasn’t thrilled about having something clunky mounted on the wall. Although, it’s a lot better than having something clunky sticking out your window that you have to install and take out every year. Once I got the ductless mini splits installed, I realized that this was a great solution. The air conditioners work very well, and I am happy with the results.

 

Buying an apartment

10 years ago, my husband and I started our family business, which is a heating and cooling corporation. When the two of us got together, he was just a heating and cooling technician. After he graduated high school, he didn’t want to go off to college and decided that he was better suited for a career in the trades. He ended up getting his HVAC certifications and working his way up the ladder in the heating and cooling industry. Before we met, I had gone to college to get my degree in business management. I worked for a local company and was making decent money, but I had always wanted to own and manage my own business. I shared my dreams with my husband, and he came up with a great idea. He thought we both had the skills necessary to come together and open a family HVAC company. He knew all there was to know on the HVAC side of things, while I knew how to run and manage a business. We considered the plan, and ultimately went for it. All these years later and our HVAC business is a total success. We have two children, and I would love it if they decided to take over the business that we started. However, I will be happy no matter what they do with their lives, as long as they are happy.

A few years ago, I woke up and realized that I was not in the best physical shape.

I decided that I wanted to commit myself to becoming more fit and I joined a gym near my house.

At first, I struggled to stay consistent. With the help of a trainer, I developed a fitness routine that I could stick with and it truly changed my life. Now, I go to the gym several days a week and I’ve come to really love it. One of the things I love about the gym is that they keep it nice and cool. They must have a really nice air conditioning system because it is always cool there. Honestly, I sometimes have to wear a sweatshirt while I am getting warmed up. My gym also has a sauna, which I love to use at the end of my workouts. The sauna is warmer than any type of heating system I have ever endured. I love that it’s all wooden and the lighting is dim and peaceful. The heat makes me sweat out everything from that day’s workout. I truly love the feeling of sitting and sweating it out after I’ve pushed my body to the limit. When I am finally so hot that I have to come out of the sauna, I am again met with the high quality air conditioning. It’s a win win! It’s the perfect balance of heating and cooling the body.

This Sunday, I had a lazy day.

I spent all day laying on the couch appreciating my air conditioning system.

Last week was one of the worst weeks I’ve had in years. First, I woke up with a bad cold to start off the week. I hate being sick, but I especially hate being sick in the summer. The heat and humidity make me feel so much worse. At the end of the work day, I finally was able to go home and I was so excited to just lay on the couch. When I walked into the house, it felt hotter than the air outside. I knew immediately that my air conditioning must have shut off. When I attempted to turn it back on, I realized that there was a bigger problem. I called a heating and cooling technician to see if they could fix it. However, they were unable to send a technician until the morning because it was already late in the evening at that point. I suffered through the hot night feeling awful and tossed and turned. The next day, the HVAC technician called me at the office and I found out that my whole central air system needed to be replaced. I didn’t even hesitate to fork over the money because I just wanted air more than anything else. Well, now the week is done and I am feeling a lot better. I really love my new central air conditioning system, and I am ready to move on from this no good week.

A few weeks ago, my friends wanted to go on this big nature weekend.

We decided to take a road trip a few hours outside of the city to go for a hike.

Some of my friends are athletic and like to work out, but I am not really into working out. I like to take walks, but they are usually about two miles long and on flat city streets. One of my more outdoorsy friends led the charge for this road trip and she picked out the hike. It turns out, she chose a hike that took us all the way up a mountain. It was about 4 miles just to get to the top. The hike took us almost 6 hours total. The summit was beautiful, but I hated just about every other second. I was so hot and I didn’t have enough food and water. My legs were in so much pain and I couldn’t keep up with the group. After the hike, we stopped into this local restaurant for a bite to eat. The restaurant had the most amazing air conditioning ever. I was about to pass out from heat exhaustion, and this restaurant’s air conditioning brought me back to life. They had a ductless mini split, and we just happened to be sitting right beside the mounted wall unit. The cool air was coming right at us. They also had ceiling fans that kept the cool air circulating throughout the restaurant.

Recently, my sister Casey unexpectedly lost her job and needed to move out of her apartment.

When I found out that she was heading for some hard times, I did not hesitate for her to come and live with me until she could figure things out.

I live by myself, and I have an extra room in my home, so it would be no problem for Casey to move in. I helped her pack up her apartment and we placed most of her stuff in storage, and we used some of my garage space to store the remainder of her stuff. She has now been living with me for close to a year now. It’s been great, but we ran into one issue. In the Winter months, I don’t use the heat unless the temperature drops below 40 degrees outside. I live in a state where we get mostly mild Winters, so I barely turn on my heat. Plus, I can’t sleep with the heat at night because it makes it hard for me to breathe, and it’s always too hot no matter what temperature I choose. On the other hand, my sister loves using the heat in the Winter. In fact, she likes the thermostat set to 76 degrees, which is way too warm for me even during the day. Well, we had to come up with a solution to our problem, and it was one of two things. I could have installed a smart thermostat so that we could each program our rooms to the ideal temperature, or we could purchase a space heater for Casey’s room. We chose the latter, which was the easiest solution to the issue.

Last Summer, we were in the middle of a heat wave. Thankfully, I had just gotten my HVAC unit serviced, so I was comfortable and had no issues for the entire season. Unfortunately, my neighbor Susan wasn’t so lucky because her HVAC unit broke down in the middle of the heat wave. I assume that happens a lot because the unit is working much harder to keep the house cool. Well, when Susan’s unit broke down, she could not find an HVAC technician who could fix the unit right away. In fact, her regular technician told her that it would take him 3 days before he could make it to her home. When Susan mentioned this to me, I felt that I needed to help her. I offered for her to stay in my home until her HVAC unit could be fixed. In addition, my sister’s husband is an HVAC technician, so I reached out to him to see if he could help. He was able to stop by Susan’s house the day after the unit broke, and thankfully, it was an easy fix. It took him about an hour and a half to diagnose and fix the issue. He found that the capacitor went bad, so he replaced it, and he also did a full maintenance and checked to make sure that nothing else was wrong with the unit. Susan was grateful that her HVAC unit was back up and running, and one year later, she has now been using my brother-in-law to service her unit for her. She learned a valuable lesson last Summer, and that is to get her A/C serviced frequently to avoid unforeseen issues.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have noticed that the price of everything has gone up. I have heard stories from friends and family members about how their grocery bills have doubled since the start of the year. Yes, they were organic apples which tend to be more expensive but that $10 could have gotten her 2 bags of apples from another store. Regular maintenance can guarantee that your HVAC unit is running efficiently. Another way to save money is to install a programmable or a smart thermostat. The thermostats will help to better regulate the indoor temperature, while keeping your home the most comfortable. Also, you may consider installing ceiling fans in your home. They can provide additional cooling when used correctly with an A/C unit. We can’t do much about the rising costs of groceries or other goods, but we can do little things in our home to save some money each month.
