The pandemic has changed our lives for good. Things will never fully return to the way they were. In fact, life has changed so much in the last two years. For instance, more people are concerned about ventilation in their homes as well as in public spaces. Schools are now approving budgets for improving their HVAC systems and installing air purification devices to improve the indoor air quality. My kids’ schools have done just that, and it makes me feel a lot safer sending them to school. However, this discussion about indoor ventilation made me realize how many kids go to schools that have no air conditioning at all. There are many schools that were built before central air conditioning was installed in commercial buildings, which means many of those older buildings have no air conditioning. And over the years, the school board didn’t invest in getting HVAC systems for the schools because it would’ve been costly to retrofit some of those buildings with the insulation needed. Also, some of the buildings do not have the space for insulation, so installing an HVAC system would be a difficult process. Well, I was glad to learn that over the last few years, some schools have figured out how to get air conditioning installed inside the older buildings. And the pandemic has released more funds to the school boards, which will in turn help more schools get the A/C that they need. This is great news because not only will the central air help to improve the air quality, but it will also make the kids a lot more comfortable inside the school buildings.

Do you follow all those national calendar days? Typically, I don’t, but there are some that I do pay attention to.

• For instance, June is National Camping month, and I love going camping and being outside in nature.

It’s an activity that I have enjoyed since I was child. My family and I used to camp all the time. And sometimes if we didn’t go camping, we would pitch our tents in the backyard and sleep underneath them. Life was so much simpler back then because camping for me looks a bit different now. I have grown to appreciate some luxuries in life, and they have certainly kept me from camping like I did as a child. For example, I need to have an air conditioner when I sleep, and unfortunately most tents are not equipped with A/Cs. There are certain campsites that have yurts or teepees that you can rent, which I have done in the past. Well for this year, I found these adorable trailers that my friends and I decided to rent for a weekend in June. It is a small campsite, and each trailer has its own theme. I love the idea because my friends and I get to choose the trailer that we like the best. But what I love most of all is that these trailers have air conditioning, which means I will be comfortable at night when I sleep. There are certain luxuries that I can’t live without, and while I love going camping it’s great that I get to enjoy it without sacrificing my comfort.

Not only would it conserve energy, but it would save money on my utility bill

I am not the type of person to get the first new gadget that’s on the market. My theory is, I like to make sure that it is something that would be useful for me before I make the purchase. Plus, I would like to make sure that all the kinks are worked out before I jump on board. I have seen it way too many times where someone I knew bought a new gadget and had to return it because it malfunctioned. So, due to that, I am always cautious. Some years ago, a friend of mine told me about smart thermostats and at the time, I was not interested in them at all. I was living in a small condo, and I didn’t think that having a smart thermostat made sense for that space. Plus, my digital thermostat worked fine and my energy bill was very low. However, now that I am in a larger space, I am considering getting the smart thermostat. Mostly because I live alone and there are rooms in my house that are always empty. For example, I have a guest room that only gets used when I have friends or family in town. So, there is no need to keep that room cool all day or all night long. So, I see the benefits of having a smart thermostat. Not only would it conserve energy, but it would save money on my utility bill. And I assume by now, they have worked out all the kinks and the technology has probably improved since they first came out on the market. I placed my order for the thermostat, now I just hope that I can install it myself.

My boyfriend isn’t concerned about comfort, he’s more worried about the cost of using the A/C that way.

I have been dating my boyfriend for about 2 years now, and we finally decided that we would move in together. Currently, we live about 15 minutes from each other, and we found a house that is convenient for the both of us. It is a 2-bedroom house, and it has a small backyard, which is great because we plan on getting a small dog. I am so excited to move in with him. The only thing that I am worried about is that my boyfriend and I can’t agree on how to use the HVAC system. In the Summer months, he likes to keep the A/C on 76 degrees at night in his apartment. But I prefer to sleep with my thermostat at 70 degrees. I love when my room is cold so that I can curl up under my blanket. And studies have shown that the ideal room temperature for sleeping is between 66 and 70 degrees, especially if you’re sleeping with an animal or another person in your bed. Between the bedding and other body temperatures, you can get hot during the night. My boyfriend isn’t concerned about comfort, he’s more worried about the cost of using the A/C that way. He feels that we can figure out another way to stay cool during the night. We have looked into bedding that will keep us cool while we sleep. I am willing to try the bedding, but if that doesn’t work, then we will need to come up with a temperature that works for the both of us.

Now that the weather is warmer, there are certain things that we do to prepare for the Summer months.

Some of these tasks can be daunting but they are necessary especially if you’re a homeowner.

One such task is getting my gutter cleaned out by removing all the leaves and debris that might have built up during the colder months. I am not fond of that task, but it is something that I need to do. Another task that I prefer is that I get my garden ready by cleaning up the yard and planting new flowers. Typically, I visit my local nursery and purchase some of my favorite plants. When it comes to inside my home, I usually wash all my curtains, and do some redecorating. In addition, I clean my air vents and change my air filter. Changing the air filter is something that many of us forget about because it’s just not top priority on our list. It’s recommended to change the HVAC filters every 30 to 90 days. Changing the filter will improve the ventilation in your home. I am guilty of not changing it for longer than 90 days, but now that it’s part of my seasonal routine, it gets changed regularly. So, once the Summer is over and the cold weather starts to creep in, I will change my air filter again. It takes less than 5 minutes to complete this task, and it is the least that I could do to improve the air quality in my home. So, have you changed your air filter lately? A few years ago, my dad retired from his job, and he moved out of the city.

He now lives in a house with a big yard, where he grows his own food.

In addition to his garden, he also has a work shed, where spends much of his days building and fixing random things that he has accumulated over the years. Well, you can imagine how hot it can get being in a shed all day, so my dad wanted to find a way to cool the space. He asked me to research portable air conditioners for him after seeing a commercial on TV. Unfortunately, the reviews I read were not convincing enough to purchase a portable air conditioner. I also looked into other brands and models to see if I could find one that performed well, but to no avail. So, I insisted that my dad get an industrial size fan and use that instead. He has used the fan for a few years now with no complaints. But last Summer was quite warm so the fan might not be the most ideal option right now. Therefore, I have decided to get him the portable A/C. I came across a few units with fantastic ratings. It seems like the manufacturers have improved the technology. One customer made a claim that her unit dropped the temperature in her room by about 20 degrees in 15 minutes. And other customers were extremely happy with the performance. So, now I feel more comfortable getting my dad the portable air conditioner that he wanted a few years ago. This unit however will be a better version than what was on the market back then.

Last week, I was mindlessly scrolling through social media.

It’s crazy how much time we spend doing nothing on the internet.

Before I knew it, an hour passed, and I consumed so much information as well as videos. Well, while scrolling, I came across an ad by an HVAC company that was promoting cleaning air ducts. And this ad showed how dirty the air ducts were. I was shocked to see the amount of build up inside of them. And it made me think of the ducts in my home. I have lived here for about 5 years now, and I have never cleaned them. So, I can’t begin to imagine what has built up over the years. Thankfully, I don’t have a pet, and I don’t smoke so I am assuming it isn’t so bad. But I am sure that there is a lot of dust, debris as well as insect carcasses. The recommendation for air duct cleaning is to do it as needed. For instance, if you notice an odor coming from your vents, it could be a dead animal trapped inside the air duct, and you should definitely get it cleaned. Also, if you notice any weird smells or see visible signs of mold, an air duct cleaning is recommended. However, after seeing that advertisement, I have scheduled to have them cleaned. I would rather have clean air ducts than ones with a lot of excess build up. The good news is, once I get it done now, I don’t need to do it for another 3 to 5 years.

When I think back on making the decision to move to the south, I wondered a bit at just how close I came to not doing it.

Having been raised and lived all of my life way up north, the south was sort of a secret passion. I tried really hard to go to college in the air conditioning of the south. But my parents weren’t about to pay out of state tuition. So it was off to a state school and a dorm room with lots of radiant heating. Still, I longed for a winter where I didn’t have to deal with the snow, the ice and the six months of cold. I longed for the HVAC cooling of the southern regions. After college, I started working in my field and stayed near home for the next ten years. When the job listing came out for a spot in our southern offices, I put my name in on a whim. I was shocked to get an interview. And I was even more stunned that I was offered the position. They gave me a few days to consider it and that’s what I did. I almost talked myself out of moving down here and taking that job. But I got over myself and realized that I had the confidence, knowledge and leadership skills to do that job. That’s been nearly a dozen years ago and that job was a springboard to the zone controlled HVAC of the office I occupy now. I don’t regret for a minute trading a gas furnace winter for a heat pump summer either.

My dad has always been a fairly stubborn person.

However, as time and technology has passed him by, he’s gotten even more stubborn.

I appreciate the fact that now every new thing is a good thing. But he tends to think that old remedies will work on new problems. Mom and dad finally moved closer to us. They have a nice little condo with great quality heating and air. Mom loves the weather down here as she was so over all the snow, ice and cold of up north. My dad is pretty fond of the region as well except when it comes to summer. He tells me quite often just how much he hates the summer heat and he’d rather be up north for the summer. Basically, from June through September, he stays inside the air conditioning of the condo. I’ve tried to coax him outside for some golf early in the mornings but he’ll hardly leave the HVAC cooling even for that. The other day, when my assistant told me my mom was on the line, I was sure that dad was dead or in the hospital. Instead, he was going to attempt a fix on the air conditioning which he felt wasn’t working well enough. I told my mom to stall him, find the HVAC warranty and I’d be there right away. When I got there, dad had pulled together some tools and a manual on air conditioning from the 80’s. Mom handed me the HVAC warranty. I then began to read aloud the part about the warranty being void if anyone but an HVAC professionals attempted a repair. That stopped him as warranties are like gold to him.
