Originally, I thought that I was happy with my brand new air conditioner.

However, after taking an unplanned visit to a local heating and a/c business.

I found that suddenly I was very interested in all of their brand new heating and air conditioning products, at least they were new to me. There were so many friendly heating and a/c technicians there, as a matter of fact it seemed like there was a new HVAC worker around every corner that I turned! I had three different people ask me if I needed any help with anything or was looking for a particular heating and a/c product. By the third time that I was asked, I decided to get the opinion of the friendly heating and cooling worker. So I asked him, what did he think would be a good air conditioner for my home? At first I thought this was a perfectly reasonable question, however the heating and ac technician informed me that he would need more information in order to fully help me with what I’m looking for. Things like, what my current setup was, what kind of air conditioning system I had in mind, what my budget was etc. When he told me that, I realized I was unintentionally very vague and so I gave him more information about what I was looking for and it was then that he was able to direct me towards an air conditioning setup that he thought that I might be interested in. It was a ductless mini split air conditioning system. The a/c that I never knew I needed. It had everything I was looking for and more! That day I made it mine when I purchased it.

I thought for sure when my heating and air conditioning machine started having issues and stopped working, that I was doomed. I was going to either receive a huge hefty HVAC repair bill, or worse, have to get an entire HVAC installation altogether. My mind was running to the worst case scenarios, but sometimes it is hard not to do that. So I reluctantly called a local cooling corporation, and explained the issue. They had enough time they could send out a cooling professional out the same day, but it wouldn’t be until later in the evening. It was close to their closing time when the air conditioning worker arrived. He went and started looking at my heat and A/C device, and I thought for sure that I was going to get bad news of some sort. But no, much to my happiness, the cooling tech told me nothing was wrong with the cooling device, and he is not sure why it randomly stopped working earlier. All he did was turn it off and then turn it right back on and sure enough it started working again. I couldn’t believe my good luck, and such a relief that it was working just fine, without any issues. I paid the small fee for the cooling tech coming out to my home, and thanked him. After he left, I breathed a huge sigh of relief. HVAC disaster avoided. Now if it can keep working until the next time I need a HVAC maintenance appointment that would be great.

So I turned on the air conditioner, and it seemed to work well.

Looking at the rental home online looked great. But I know sometimes you have to be careful, because sometimes the pictures look way better than what the actual place looks like. So I went and visited the place, and was pleasantly surprised to find it looked almost as good as the picture. I rented the place and the nice part about this place is that it is already furnished, so I didn’t have to worry about moving much, I could pretty much move in the same day. Something I didn’t think about, that I really should have considered more when getting a place, is the air conditioning system. I am kind of worried about the heating and cooling system, since I have heard of some people getting a nice place that would have a terrible heating and cooling machine. There is not much point in living in a nice place if it has terrible HVAC. Without climate control, living here is going to be very uncomfortable. So I turned on the air conditioner, and it seemed to work well. I tried the furnace system, and it also seemed to work just fine. I felt relieved immediately, and hoped the air conditioner and heater would continue to work properly, and not have issues once summer and winter arrive. Granted, I don’t know if I am going to live here long term or not, so it probably doesn’t matter that much. I just need it to keep working while I still live here.

Although I try to keep in touch with my friends, sometimes things just get in the way, and I don’t end up talking to my friends for years. One of my friends, the last time I had talked to him, he was planning on becoming a lawyer. Something I fully believed he would be good at, since he believes in faith and justice. A few years down the line, we end up talking again, and when I asked how being a lawyer is, that is when he dropped the news that he actually is a cooling worker now. I was shocked! I thought for sure he would become a lawyer, and even if he didn’t, I never would have guess an air conditioning technician. He usually strives for more complicated jobs, and so to settle for something so simple was surprising. I asked him why he quit being a lawyer, and he told me because of some of the cases he saw, and how the system is corrupt. He lost faith in humanity after a while, and didn’t want to deal with it anymore. I felt bad for him, especially since I knew he would be a great lawyer and we need more of those. Then I asked why he chose to be a heating and air conditioner professional. He told me because he was tired of dealing with the complexities of life, he just wanted something simple that he could focus on, and not worry anymore. I kind of understood, but I was still surprised.

We hosted my childhood friends in my house shortly after we moved in last summer and we all couldn’t help but reminisce about the days when we dreamt of living in homes that had an air conditioner.

All our homes had a simple HVAC unit that was almost always calling for a visit from an HVAC professional from the local HVAC company and sometimes it was too expensive to repair so we all went to the movies or stayed outside to keep cool.

Something had broken the ductwork in our house, and that marked the start of a long season without any help with indoor comfort until my mom birthed our youngest brother. We bonded a lot as friends on the hot nights when we’d spend time finding somewhere else to be before bedtime, and during the day, we stayed away from home. It’s sad and funny to talk about it now that each of us has homes where indoor comfort matters and we can afford the services of an HVAC technician, but back then, we couldn’t stop dreaming about living in houses as comfortable as hotel rooms. Only one of us had experienced a hotel room when we were young but the description of how the room felt just right was enough to captivate our imaginations on what comfort felt like.

There was this season some years back when almost everyone I knew was starting a holiday home project on and off Airbnb. I fell into the wagon and found the property to buy and rent it. I bought a decent but old house and thought I could style it with aesthetically pleasing décor, get guests and finish paying off the mortgage I took on it, and earn myself some profits. I should never have ignored my sister, she warned me not to go with the flow. The house I bought needed much more than decorations. The HVAC unit was damaged beyond any Ac repair. Replacing it was a priority since we’d need help with indoor comfort. The air quality in the house was already telling that the house had been without a working air conditioning system for a while, but with guests, it wasn’t a chance to take. I signed up for home services with the local HVAC company and started the rest of the work. Unlike most old homes, it had ductwork, and that too needed to be replaced. On assessing the state of the HVAC and air conditioner, the HVAC technician confirmed to us that the existing air duct system could not be used and it would be wiser to consider going ductless because the house also had a mold problem. I wish I had analyzed the entire house before buying it, but I had blindly assumed that I would be troubled by HVAC maintenance or replacement. Running a guesthouse might be the most challenging business I have run in my entire life. I keep the air conditioner well maintained and change the Ac filter every month without fail. I even signed up for the air conditioning system home services program to make sure I would be able to get an HVAC technician to come by in case we had any emergencies. All my HVAC maintenance efforts were trashed when a couple of guests came over and brought three very furry pets who were all smokers. I like to trust my guests to follow the rules so I do not hover around to make sure they follow every little one, but in this case, I wish I had hovered. Another family was coming in within a day after they checked out, but the entire house smelt of smoke, and nothing I did to clean it helped. I opened the windows the moment they left and turned on the HVAC unit longer than I did on other days to see if the air quality would improve, but nothing seemed to help. The eventual solution was that the smoke was trapped within the ductwork, and we’d need to clear it out. There was also fur left all over the house, yet my next clients asked for a fur-free house. I had to have the air duct cleaned to avoid the risk of igniting any allergies. While I did not have to do any Ac repair, paying for help with indoor comfort before my next guests checked in was an expense I had not expected and I unfortunately could not trace my inconsiderate guests and bill them. I recently installed a window unit in my bedroom alongside the central HVAC unit to help with indoor comfort and energy efficiency since it is where I spent most of my time when I was at home.

I had even replaced the analog thermostat with a smart one which allowed me to change or adjust the temperature in the house even when I was at work.

All this so that I could try and save more on the energy cost. I knew the SEER rating of my current air conditioning system was not so good since it was an old model but I could not afford a new air conditioner. I was even dreading the HVAC maintenance I had signed up with the local HVAC company, but I knew I had stretched my luck even with the ac filter replacement. I knew that when the HVAC technician came for ac repair, he would tell me that the a/c was hanging on a prayer but there was nothing I could do. I needed to get a new filter but I kept telling myself that I lived close to the ocean so it was not necessarily true. The indoor air quality at my place was not so good. The ductwork has a lot of duct tape courtesy of my playing the role of an HVAC technician, but I had to do something about the leaks in the air duct. With the current pay cuts at my workplace, I could barely afford the service fee. I was feeling very frustrated since I was living on the bare minimum. If I happened to pass the last interview I attended, it would be of much relief since it was a very well-paying job. In the meantime, home services had to take a back seat.

I have been listening to too much television lately.

I enjoyed some of those corny advertisements, and they were even worse when they became infomercials.

I knew my temperature control had wireless, and I thought my air conditioning also had wireless. I thought about how much currency I could save if the air conditioning component worked mostly on batteries. I could buy a charging dock and plug the air conditioning component whenever it started lagging, all air conditioning units work on electricity, so I thought it would be more convenient. If you had rechargeable batteries in the AC, and a convenient charging dock in the backyard, it would make life easier. My fiance had all kinds of tools that used rechargeable batteries. I told him my idea, and he just looked at me like I had a fifth eye, or my head had gotten smaller. He asked if I was serious. I was totally serious. I wanted to know if our air conditioning component could be run with batteries? He told me our solar panels charged batteries that kept our entire household with electricity, so in essence, our Heating and A/C system was battery powered, however putting rechargeable batteries in the air conditioning component wouldn’t work. There would be no way you could take out the batteries and recharge them… You wouldn’t have air conditioning for the entire time the batteries were charging. I told him my buddy and I could recharge them while they were still inside. He reminded me that was why it was congested into the electric system, and why my buddy and I had solar panels. It was just a thought.
